Currently, automakers are not required to provide full vehicle lifecycle support for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). As a result, vehicle manufacturers do not share ADAS calibration information, data, proper mounting or functionality windows, testing procedures/information, instructions, and application guides with vehicle owners or the automotive aftermarket.
H.R. 6688, the “ADAS Functionality and Integrity Act,” is a bill introduced by House Rep. Harshbarger (R-TN) and bipartisan cosponsors: Representatives Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), Jay Obernolte (R-CA), and Norma Torres (D-CA).
An amended version of this SEMA-supported bill was recently passed by the House Energy & Commerce Committee as part of Sec. 221 of H.R. 7389, which requires the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to study the impacts that common modifications have on ADAS performance and empowers the agency to establish clear guidelines to enable the aftermarket and vehicle owners to properly calibrate ADAS after a vehicle customization, repair, and modification.
This is the first major step in securing the Right to Modify in the automotive aftermarket industry. Calibration is essential for safety and reliability when you need it most. Enthusiasts deserve the right to modify confidently and responsibly, without losing safety features or facing manufacturer restrictions.
This is about freedom, safety, and choice.
Support the ADAS Functionality and Integrity Act. Send a Letter to your Representative and urge them to support safety, responsibility, and freedom of choice
