SEMA-led Right to Modify Legislation introduced to Congress.
Currently, vehicle manufacturers are not required to provide full vehicle lifecycle support for Advanced Drivers Assistance Systems (ADAS). As a result, automakers typically do not share ADAS calibration information, data, proper mounting or functionality windows, testing procedures/information, instructions, and application guides with the aftermarket.
The ADAS Functionality and Integrity Act is a Bipartisan Bill introduced by House Rep. Harshbarger (R-TN) and cosponsored by Rep. Vasquez (D-NM), Rep. Obernolte (R-CA), and Rep. Torres (D-CA).
This SEMA-led Bill will urge NHTSA to establish clear guidelines for OEM’s and Aftermarket Industry in reference to ADAS customization, repair, and modification.
The guidelines must include:
- Clear guidelines that specify how much a vehicle’s ride height, wheel and tire dimensions, and suspension settings can be changed while still keeping advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) working properly.
- Defined limits for how much a vehicle’s height or position can shift in any direction before recalibration is required.
- A requirement for automakers to share key information about these tolerances and system sensitivities with both vehicle owners and NHTSA within 30 days of releasing a new model.
This is the first major step in securing the Right to Modify in the automotive aftermarket industry. Calibration is essential for safety and reliability when you need it most. Enthusiasts deserve the right to modify confidently and responsibly, without losing safety features or facing manufacturer restrictions.
This is about freedom, safety, and choice.
Support the ADAS Functionality and Integrity Act. Send a Letter to your Representative and urge them to support safety, responsibility, and freedom of choice.
